  • Blog2Social posting broken links to FB. Does NOT appear to be OG tag related

    Hi folks,
I've been using B2S for the past 3 years approximately, and I've never had a major problem until now. Over the past two months, it's been posting broken links to Facebook. As in "Page not found." It still gets the preview text right.

I've checked the OG tags and this is what I see:

    Hello Heather,

Thank you for getting in touch.

Could you please send me the link to your Facebook page?
I'd love to see a few examples of what you’re mentioning and take a closer look.

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Best regards

      Hi Benedikt,
I actually solved the problem. For some reason - new update to Jetpack? - Jetpack had defaulted to a setting that served WebP images instead of .jpgs. Since Facebook doesn't accept WebP, it was posting 404 errors. I went into Jetpack and changed the setting, and it started serving .jpgs again. Today, the new posts are posting properly. Is it possible to update B2S to get around this though? I'd actually prefer to serve webps in the interest of speed optimization, but that would require the plugin institute a workaround to serve .jpgs to Facebook, and I don't know if that's possible.

        Hello Heather,

        Thanks for your reply.

I do not assume that the original issue was caused by using “webp” images since it’s possible to publish “webp” images to Facebook via Blog2Social.
It is more likely that the problem is related to using multiple plugins that generate the Open Graph data on your website, or a general issue with your link, as you mentioned receiving “404 Error” and “Page not found” messages for that URL.
Therefore, I would recommend ensuring that only one plugin is used to generate the Open Graph tags, and then testing again to see if the issue is resolved.

I have also included the following guides for you:
What are open graph tags and what do I use them for?
Troubleshooting: Checklist and solutions for setting Open Graph Tags

Feel free to let me know if it worked out.

        Best regards

        Benedikt

OK, yes. It turns out it's still not working. It worked once but that's it. What kind of plugin would create conflicts by generating open graph tags? I literally haven't changed a thing. What's more, the usual problems that I associate with OG tag problems aren't happening here. If I run FB debugger, everything comes out fine. As soon as I hit "refresh share attachment" it displays the post properly.

            Hello Heather,

            Thank you for your response.

It would be helpful if you could provide the link to your Facebook page. Please make sure that there are some examples with the issues you’re mentioning so I can review them.

            Best regards

                Hello Heather,

Thank you for the provided information.

After reviewing a few of your posts, I noticed that you are using All in One SEO and Blog2Social to generate your Open Graph tags. As mentioned before, we generally recommend using only one plugin for this to avoid potential conflicts. However, I don’t believe the issue is related to the Open Graph tags in this case.

A similar issue was recently discussed in this community thread where another customer experienced the same problem. In that situation, the issue was caused by WordFence and could be resolved by adjusting the WordFence settings. I’ve attached a screenshot for you showing what you should check.

Please let me know if it worked out.

                Best regards

                Benedikt

I don't use WordFence, Benedikt. And you're right, I do use All In One SEO, but I've been using that for years. I've never had an issue with it interfering with Blog2Social before.

                    Hello Heather,

Did you make any changes? I’ve noticed that the “Page not found” posts have disappeared from your Facebook page.

In the thread I referenced, the security plugin “SiteGround“ was also mentioned as a possible cause, in addition to Wordfence. I just wanted to make sure this is also on your radar as a potential factor. As I mentioned before, I don’t primarily assume that different plugins creating Open Graph tags are the root of the issue. However, this can still lead to problems for Facebook or other networks when multiple plugins generate these tags.

Please also keep in mind that Blog2Social only forwards the link of your post to the respective social network. The link preview and image are then generated solely by the network itself, based on the Open Graph tags on your page. So even if you haven’t experienced any issues in the past, the cause is likely outside of Blog2Social. We can only provide recommendations on what to check to ensure that Facebook can correctly retrieve and display the information from your links.

                    Best regards

                    Benedikt

Hi Benedikt, I have been refreshing the share attachments on Facebook to fix the broken links. As soon as I refresh share attachment, the problem resolves. This is why I'm suspicious of the OG explanation. Because, if the issue is with OG tags, it typically doesn't resolve that simply. There's not an obvious explanation for this in the changes I've made to the site in the past while, but I'll look at the Siteground plugin to see if something might've triggered it and check with Siteground about anything on the server side.

                        Hello Heather,

Thanks for the update and for sharing your observations.

While the Open Graph tags are still a common cause, your experience could indeed point to something else affecting how Facebook retrieves the preview on the first attempt.

Since there may be a security plugin or a server-side setting preventing Facebook from creating the preview correctly at first, please feel free to let us know as soon as you receive any feedback from SiteGround or after reviewing your security plugins. This information will help us better understand what might be interfering on your website.

                        Best regards

                        Benedikt

Hello Benedikt, I have had some extensive back and forth with Siteground on this but nothing we have tried has worked. May I please have some personalized support with this? I've now not had a working product for more than three months. Many thanks.

                            Hello Heather,

                            Thank you for your feedback.

We are always happy to help and strive to provide the best possible support. Regarding this case, please keep in mind that Blog2Social acts by providing your WordPress post's link to Facebook. Once that link is shared, the preview generation is handled entirely by Facebook’s own systems.
Since this behavior is determined by the connection between your server and Facebook, it falls outside our technical control. If reviewing your security plugins or firewalls doesn’t resolve the issue, we recommend reaching out to Facebook Support directly.

As a workaround, I suggest switching your Facebook post format to 'Image Posts' and placing the link within the text or the first comment. With this format, Blog2Social uploads the image directly to Facebook, which bypasses the preview generation issue and ensures your content displays correctly.

You can find an explanation of the differences between Link Posts and Image Posts here, along with instructions on how to share information in the first comment below your social media post.

Please don't hesitate if you have further questions.
